According to a press release, The Dodos highly-anticipated (by this writer, if no one else) third LP, Time To Die, was leaked on teh internetz last Wednesday. Much like Stars before them, the San Francisan trio have responded to the leak in active fashion, by bumping up the digital release date to July 28th. But that’s not all, folks!
The band has launched a dedicated website where fans can listen to a high-quality version of the album, pre-order their physical copy now, get a free download of Time to Die’s first single “Fables,” and watch a video message from the band themselves, explaining the truly exciting part. And what could that exciting part be?…In a mere two weeks, the album will be available exclusively at Amazon MP3, and everywhere else the week after. And even better, on July 28th, Time To Die will be the featured Deal of The Day on Amazon, where it’ll be cheap. Real cheap.
Sounds neat, if it weren’t for the fact that ain’t nuthin’ cheaper than free.
So if this move is to ostensibly fight a leak, why are they waiting two weeks to make the record available at Amazon, and not making the album for download—as opposed to streaming the record, which you can do here—available immediately, through the record label store (as Stars did back in 2007)?
The answer to that one is probably self-explanatory. (No doubt a band as small-ish as The Dodos could use every exclusive deal they can get). Maybe they’ll explain more here.
While you’re at it, stream “Fools” and brand spankin’ new song “Fables” at the top of the post.
